Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah’s career spans more than three decades of distinguished diplomatic service, marked by strategic influence and long-standing international relationships. He began his journey in Kuwait’s mission to the United Nations in New York, contributing to multilateral efforts during and after the Gulf War. During this formative period, he was involved in advancing Kuwait’s international positioning, supporting coalition-building efforts, and reinforcing the country’s sovereignty through diplomatic channels.

He later served as Ambassador to South Korea, strengthening bilateral relations during a period of rapid economic growth and expanding cooperation across energy, trade, and infrastructure. In 2001, he was appointed Ambassador to the United States. Over more than two decades in Washington, serving across four U.S. administrations, he became a central figure in shaping modern U.S.–Kuwait relations, reinforcing Kuwait’s position as a key strategic partner. His tenure coincided with significant regional developments, including the Iraq War and its aftermath, supporting sustained security and regional stability. Beyond defense, he advanced economic and institutional ties, private sector engagement, and strengthened collaboration in education, culture, and innovation, while engaging policymakers, think tanks, and media to institutionalize the bilateral relationship.

In 2022, Sheikh Salem was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait. In this role, he led the country’s diplomatic strategy during a period of significant regional and international change. He oversaw Kuwait’s engagement with key global partners, participated in high-level international forums, and reinforced the country’s role in promoting dialogue, cooperation, and stability. His tenure further strengthened Kuwait’s position as a trusted and influential partner on the global stage, while maintaining its longstanding approach of balanced and constructive diplomacy

Today, as Chairman of Sama X, Sheikh Salem brings this depth of experience into the private sector. His appointment reflects a strategic vision to leverage global relationships, geopolitical insight, and cross-border expertise to support the company’s international expansion. He plays a critical role in guiding Sama X’s efforts to build meaningful partnerships, navigate complex regulatory environments, and establish a strong presence across the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and beyond.

He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in political science from the American University of Beirut. He was born in Kuwait City in 1957 and is married with four sons. Fluent in Arabic, English, and French, he is widely recognized for his ability to navigate diverse cultural and political environments with diplomacy, credibility, and strategic foresight.
