KUWAIT TO DRIVE A NEW ERA IN GLOBAL GEOPOLITICS AND GROWTH WITH NORTHERN GULF GATEWAY PROJECT

The first session of the Kuwait Investment Forum 2018 (KIF 2018), on ‘Investing for the Future Kuwait’ presented a bold statement in global geopolitics from Kuwait – driving the closer cooperation with the region – through the ambitious Northern Gulf Gateway, an integrated flagship project for realizing the Kuwait National Vision 2035 that will open doors for investment opportunities for US, European, Chinese and Asian investors.

Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, first deputy prime minister and minister of defense, Kuwait; Dr. Merza Hasan – executive director & dean of the board of executive directors, World Bank Group; Omar Kutayba Alghanim – CEO, Alghanim Industries & chairman, Gulf Bank Kuwait; Timothy Keating – executive vice president of government operations, Boeing Company, USA; and Ms. Noura Al-Qabandi – director of international affairs and research department, CITRA, Kuwait, addressed the session.

The panelists underlined the importance of fostering regional and global liberalization, trade integration and cultural integration, and the leading role of the private sector in development, financing and investment, as well as the need to introduce legislation and supportive systems for sustainable development.

At the session, the Boeing Company announced that it would open its permanent office in Kuwait, which will scale up the number of high-quality job opportunities for Kuwaiti nationals.

More details of the Northern Gulf Gateway that opens tremendous opportunities for investment and its impact on the economy were also announced.

Sheikh Nasser said: “To change things have prevailed and to regain our growth, we have chosen the Northern Gulf Gateway development, not only as an economic catalyst but also to build a new geopolitical era. We can use the geographic advantage of our northern region, which lies closest to two of the world’s oldest civilizations to help build new relations with our neighbors. Connecting to the Belt Road Initiative, the development will have a world-class airport, industries, a knowledge zone, leisure zone and educational zone. With Northern Gulf Gateway, Kuwait will be a catalyst in bringing together other countries in the region and across the world.”

Alghanim said: “Our growth story has only begun; we are an open transparent market place, we are the oldest democracy in the region, we have a healthy balance sheet and geographic location. There is no better time than now to be part of the Kuwait story, underlined by the practical changes we see around. International corporations are opening office, and with our administrative and regulatory changes, we are open to global business. Since the inception of our SME Fund, more than $7 billion were set aside for them; such support doesn’t happen in any other country.”

Keating said: “The Middle East alone would need 63,000 pilots by 2035 as well as 69,000 technicians in addition to training to be offered for 100,000 crew. Such training partnerships are what we are looking at in Kuwait, so the young people here do not have to leave the country to be trained. We hope to add Kuwait to the list of our training centers as you have the right talent base and infrastructure here. We have about 50 employees now but watch the numbers grow.”

Al-Qabandi said: “Kuwait has led world relations, benefited humanity and assisted developing countries financially. We see the next big opportunity in the Northern region as an investment haven with God-given resources, land and a central location. It is a place where civilizations met, traded and connected, and it is our future. The project is directly aligned with Kuwait’s advancement in connecting the world.” She gave details of the different zones that will include an educational hub; a center for smart industry and future technologies and with a port of 8 million TEU capacity; a financial hub with a stock exchange, and a touristic destination that also will feature a world-class medical facility.

Highlighting the role of the Forum in supporting the goals of Vision 2035, Dr. Merza said: "What really underscores Vision 2035, a transformative initiative is that will drive the Kuwait economy from a single-resource economy to a diversified and dynamic economy is the importance it plays on human capital, and the role of the private sector in helping achieve Vision 2035.”

Held under the aegis of Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber, KIF 2018 was co-organized by the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA), and the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) at the Bayan Palace and the Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre (JACC).

The event builds on the positive momentum gained globally following the country’s commitment to the Kuwait 2035 road map that aims to transform the nation into a world-class financial and commercial center.

Yusuf A. Alghanim & Sons celebrates 70-year partnership with General Motors Middle East

Inaugurates the first flagship Cadillac and Chevrolet showrooms in Kuwait

Kuwait, 18 March 2018: Yusuf A. Alghanim & Sons, the exclusive distributor of Cadillac and Chevrolet cars in Kuwait, celebrated their 70-year partnership with General Motors Middle East at a press event hosted by CEO of Alghanim Industries, Omar K. Alghanim, held at the construction site of the new Cadillac and Chevrolet showrooms.

The event was attended by President and Managing Director of General Motors Middle East and Africa, Mario A. Spangenberg, and executives from Alghanim Industries.

To mark the 70-year partnership, Vice President of General Motors Kuwait, Rajesh Krishnan presented the renderings of the new Cadillac and Chevrolet facilities to be built. Following the presentation, the attendees inaugurated the construction site of the first flagship Cadillac and Chevrolet showrooms by laying the first brick and cement foundation stone.

Speaking at the event, Omar K. Alghanim said: “This is an exciting year for Yusuf A. Alghanim & Sons, as we celebrate the groundbreaking of our newest facilities. This year, we’re also celebrating a huge milestone for our company – 70 years of partnership with General Motors. 70 years ago my grandfather, Yusuf Ahmed Alghanim became partners with General Motors, laying the foundation to what is now the longest standing dealership in our region. My father and our Chairman, Kutayba Yusuf Alghanim, propelled this partnership to new heights and grew our business to the household name it is today. I am proud to be the third generation of the Alghanim family to partner with this global automotive leader.”

He went on to say, “These facilities will be exceptional. We’ve taken our extensive knowledge in the automotive sector to create a state-of-the-art experience for our customers. We continue to deliver on our promise to serve, support and place our customers at the heart of everything we do.”

ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES RESTORES SIX HOUSES IN KUWAIT FOR ORPHANS AS PART OF THE CHILDREN HOME PROJECT
Alghanim Industries, one of the largest, privately-owned companies in the Gulf region, announced today that it will cover the second phase costs of The Children Home project, launched by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor - Social Welfare Sector. The second phase, which began this year, includes the restoration and renovation of six homes and one central kitchen, followed by the restoration of an outdoor play area, all of which will improve the lives of the orphans.
The new homes will be modeled on the United Nation’s SOS Children’s Villages system, which is based on the ‘Alternative Mother’ concept, where orphaned children are given the opportunity to live and grow up in independent homes with ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ and a so-called alternative mother. This will replace the old system used previously in the orphanage, where all children lived in one dwelling, and slept in dormitories that lacked the warmth stemming from family closeness.
Alghanim Industries made its contribution through Khair Al Kuwait, a charity organization operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, which is restoring The Children Home buildings.  The work is being carried out in five phases.  Phase one, which included restoring four houses, medical clinic, theater, and multi-usage hall, has been completed and phase two is under process and due for completion by October 2015.
The houses have been designed by SSH, one of the leading architecture and engineering consultancy companies in the MENA region. SSH donated its services free of charge as part of its corporate social responsibility. The company designed the houses based on the children’s needs and lifestyle. The six houses are placed in two rows facing each other, and separated by a small space where children can gather and play. The design also includes an open backyard to be used by the children. This is in addition to many other improvements such as painting the home facades in different colors, allowing the children to recognize their home easily.
Upon completion of Phase 2 of the project, the six houses will accommodate between 24 and 36 children.  Each house consists of three rooms for children, a mother’s room, a family room, a bathroom and a kitchen.
Commenting on this initiative, Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Undersecretary, Dr. Matar Al Mutairi, said: “The Children Home project is one of the key projects initiated by the Social Welfare Sector at the Ministry.  It targets children from newborn onwards, offering them a safe and secure environment to develop. When the restoration and renovation of these houses is completed, we will be introducing the same system of care as that used by the organization of SOS Children's Villages.  This offers children an alternative mother, as well as brothers and sisters, providing them with excellent care in a home-like environment.”
He added: “We are very pleased to collaborate with Alghanim Industries on such an important project and we appreciate its efforts in supporting such a humanitarian initiative. The support of the private sector for government owned projects is a behavior that forms part of the history of Kuwait and we hope these important partnerships will continue.”
Chairman of Khair Al Kuwait, Mrs. Feryal Duaij Al-Sabah, said: "Among the charity projects we have initiated and managed at Khair Al Kuwait, we give special importance to The Children Home Project as we believe it is fundamental to changing the lives of children for the better, and reflects the real meaning of humanitarian values and morals. I would like to thank Alghanim Industries for supporting this project and many others in Kuwait and outside Kuwait, and I would encourage other companies to take positive steps to support these types of projects, from which the whole community can benefit”.
Commenting on the initiative, Kutayba Y. Alghanim, Chairman of Alghanim Industries, said: “We are thrilled to be part of this important humanitarian project in Kuwait that serves the interests of orphaned children while they are growing up.  These homes will ensure that children will get excellent care in a secure, home-like atmosphere, similar to the family environment that children enjoy when living among their siblings and parents in their own home.

This is why we have showed great interest in the Children Home project.  Our team has not spared any efforts to help Khair Al Kuwait complete this stage. As part of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, Social Care Sector initiative, The Children Home project is the only venue offering shelter and care for orphaned children in Kuwait.  It welcomes children from all age groups and cares for them until they reach the age of 12. The boys are then transferred to their own housing and girls to a hospitality building.  Both buildings are under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor -Social Care Sector.
This initiative is part of the Alghanim Industries social responsibility program of empowering the needy, supporting the education sector and encouraging entrepreneurship and emphasizes its commitment of giving back to society.
Alghanim Industries was recently named a “Diamond Partner” by the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCD) in recognition of its efforts to support KRCD by facilitating treatment to patients who are unable to afford it in Kuwait and for helping Nurture and Educate Students Today (NEST), which aims to raise awareness and support education of underprivileged children.


 


 

The new center, which has been commissioned following a donation of KD330,000 (US$1.1 million) from the Arab Fund for Economic Development, will be run by the Lebanese Civil Council Against Addiction.

 It will be a base from which 123 addicts from different age groups and backgrounds, including a number of refugees from Syria, can embark on rehabilitation programmes to assist them away from their addiction. 

Kutayba Y. Alghanim, Chairman of Alghanim Industries, said: “In the Arab world where youth unemployment reaches 25%, drug addiction is a scourge which modern society cannot afford to ignore.  It ruins the lives of the people who are addicted, and it affects the lives of families and loved ones.  We need to give our young people the best chance possible to thrive and if they fall into the abyss of drug misuse and addiction we need to ensure that there is support to help them out. 

“I believe that this growing problem can only be fought and resolved by governments and businesses working hand-in-hand together. And I would like to take this chance to encourage other business leaders in Kuwait and the Middle East to do all they can to prevent our youth from falling into this slippery road, especially in the areas with high number of addicts and inadequate rehabilitation institutions.”

The donation is part of Alghanim Industries’ Corporate Social Responsibility programme which pays attention to the youth.  It continues the longstanding close relationship of support and partnership between Kuwait and Lebanon on both government and business levels.

The project was launched at The Avenues on Thursday, 7 May and remained open until Saturday, 23 May.  In Phase 2 of The Avenues, NEST recreated a typical Mumbai slum setting and conducted tours through the display, highlighting to visitors the differences and advantages that education can bring to the lives of children in the slums.  In a designated section of the display, visitors were invited to browse through binders containing details about specific children whose education they could sponsor for a whole year with a donation of just KD 65. This sponsorship includes tuition fees, supplies, uniform, textbooks and exam fees. Over 20,000 people visited the display and  the project  raised enough funds to offer scholarships to 1,978 students for two consecutive years..   NEST currently has plans to launch similar campaigns to benefit underprivileged children in Palestine and Egypt as well as local children, here in Kuwait. Donations for future NEST projects are welcome via the Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society.

ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES EMPLOYEE INITIATIVE TO HELP VICTIMS OF THE NEPALESE EARTHQUAKE DISASTER

Alghanim Industries, one of the largest, privately-owned companies in the Gulf region, has mobilized resources on several fronts to assist with the relief efforts in Nepal, in response to the recent devastating earthquakes in the country.  The company has made it easy for employees to contribute to the efforts by authorizing payroll deductions or making donations in special collections boxes that are disbursed throughout the company’s locations.  In addition, Alghanim Industries is matching the employee contributions on a two-to-one basis, thereby tripling the impact of these donations.  One hundred percent of all the funds raised through this initiative will be forwarded to the International Medical Corps (IMC), a non-profit organisation operating on the ground in Nepal, to provide medical assistance and life-saving emergency services.

Alghanim Industries employs many nationalities across its businesses, including 381 Nepalese, many of whom have been directly affected by the disaster.   In addition to allocating funds to support the IMC in its critical effort through the donation campaign, the company is also providing direct assistance to eleven employees to rebuild homes which were completely destroyed in the earthquake on 25 April.  The company has performed a survey of the impact to its Nepalese employees, and it has established a committee to oversee the disbursement of funds in a timely manner for the intended purpose. 

Commenting on the initiative, Kutayba Y Alghanim, Chairman, Alghanim Industries, said: “Tragedies such as that in Nepal affect all of us.  People help people, everyone is part of the solution, no matter how big or small their contribution is.  I am very proud of the generosity and the concern for their colleagues shown by Alghanim Industries employees in supporting efforts to help the victims of this major natural disaster.  Although we are a large international company, we have also shown that we are a compassionate and generous one too. We feel that it is our responsibility to provide support our employees and their families who have been affected by this disaster and to help them rebuild their homes, and we hope that other businesses will do the same.”   
Alghanim Industries organized a similar donation campaign in November 2013 to aid the victims of the Typhoon Haiyan, the deadliest natural disaster ever to hit the Philippines. Following the campaign, Alghanim Industries matched the total donation amount, and like the current campaign, one hundred percent of the funds were forwarded to the IMC. As a company that employs such a diverse workforce, Alghanim Industries considers providing aid internationally to be a matter of local concern.

ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES DIRECTOR ADDRESSES INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE

Andrew Finch, Director – Organisational Development at Alghanim Industries gave a presentation on the theme of hiring quality talent, and used the opportunity to unveil the company’s brand new Careers Website (http://careers.alghanim.com/), to 150 thought leaders at the LinkedIn MENA conference, which was held at The Meydan in Dubai on Thursday, 23 April.

Mr Finch stressed the enormous competitive advantage that talented employees bring to companies world-wide, emphasising the need for companies in the MENA region in particular to work hard to get their ‘employee value propositions’ communicated effectively to their target audiences.  He said; “Competition for the very best talent will only get harder in this market, as the Gulf economies continue to rapidly develop and diversify.  Investing in the best talent helps to ensure that companies can grow and maintain their edge in a rapidly evolving and fiercely competitive market place.” 

Using Alghanim Industries as a case study, Mr Finch spoke about the company’s one-and-a-half year journey to define its own core employee value propositions of Diversified Businesses, Talent Development, and History & Legacy.  During the seminar, Mr Finch also unveiled Alghanim Industries’ brand new Careers Website for the first time.  Explaining the importance of the new site to Alghanim Industries, he said:  “We have developed the new Careers Website to help address the challenges of attracting potential employees of the highest calibre, both now and for the future.  We are confident it will be a major asset in helping us to reinforce Alghanim Industries’ position as one of the leading companies in the Gulf region.”

ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES HOSTS BUSINESS SEMINAR AT KU

Rashid Sultan, General Manager of the Wendy’s franchise operation for the MENA region, which Alghanim Industries recently acquired, conducted an hour long seminar entitled ‘Road less traveled – Acquisitions at Alghanim Industries’ to over 100 students and university staff.

Using Alghanim Industries as a case study, Sultan reviewed the company’s growth, explaining how it has developed interests in a broad range of business sectors and international markets.  He focused on how corporate strategy has shaped Alghanim Industries’ business policies, how mergers, acquisitions and alliances have contributed to the company’s growth, and the factors which need to be taken into account for a successful acquisition, such as revenue and cost synergies. The seminar finished with a lively and animated discussion with the students on effective company strategies for growth.

Afterwards, Sultan said: “Alghanim Industries was very pleased to have had the opportunity to host this seminar.  While some of the concepts might have been complex, it was really good to see that the student body was engaged and interested in business principles such as corporate strategy, M&A, alliances and economic value added. As a college student, it is all about the theory. But it is also interesting to hear about business concepts from a practitioner rather than an academic. When I put myself in their shoes, it would have been good for me to hear about real life from a practitioner once in a while. So this is my chance to make what I would have wished for their reality - and inspire them”.

Alghanim Industries has hosted a number of undergraduate seminars at Kuwait universities and colleges as part of its commitment to supporting youth in Kuwait, especially in encouraging their interests in working in the private sector.  

This commitment extends right across the whole company; Omar K Alghanim, Alghanim Industries CEO, is also the long-time chairman of INJAZ-Kuwait and a board member of INJAZ Al-Arab, which is dedicated to creating viable work opportunities for young people in the Arab world.

ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES SPONSORS CFA INSTITUTE RESEARCH CHALLENGE IN KUWAIT

Alghanim Industries, one of the largest privately owned companies in the Gulf Region, has sponsored the Kuwait national round of the CFA Institute Research Challenge, the winner of which was announced on 4 March at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Kuwait.  The winner of the challenge, Kuwait University’s team, will now go on to represent Kuwait in the EMEA regional competition in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on 2 April.

Omar Kutayba Alghanim, Chief Executive Officer, Alghanim Industries said: “We are very proud to support this program.  CFA Institute is a world renowned organization and its Research Challenge has international recognition.  As an organization, we are committed to supporting any initiatives which encourage local students to strive for excellence and help draw attention to the high levels of achievement in Kuwait.”  

Robert Etman, Chief Financial Officer for Alghanim Industries, was present at the ceremony and awarded the winners their certificates.  He said: “Alghanim Industries is a committed supporter of education and is very pleased to sponsor the CFA Research Challenge local final, which highlights the great depth and breadth of local financial talent that exists in Kuwait.  I was very impressed with the quality and high standard of all the presentations we have seen this evening and congratulate the Kuwait University team, lead by Faculty Advisor, Dr. Bader Alhashel, and wish them the best of luck in the next round in Amsterdam in April.”

This year’s competition, the second time it has been organized in Kuwait, featured teams from American University Kuwait (AUK), American University Middle East (AUM), Australian College of Kuwait (ACK) and Kuwait University.  For the finale of the competition, each of the four teams presented an equity research report on the Zain Group to an independent panel of judges. Included in the judging panel was Haamed Alfulaji, Director - Corporate Strategy, Business Development and Mergers & Acquisitions from Alghanim Industries.

Alghanim Industries has a long history of supporting education initiatives in Kuwait and has previously supported an information session for admissions to Harvard University, and participated in a number of local conferences and Startup Weekend – where students learn the basics of startups from industry experts.

ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES HOSTS 'HARVARD SEMINAR'

 

As part of its efforts to support education and connect with talented Kuwaiti graduates, Alghanim Industries hosted a career seminar titled “Negotiating Success in your Business Career”, for a select group of recently-graduated Kuwaiti students, at the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel on Wednesday, 18 March 2015. Omar K Alghanim, CEO of Alghanim Industries, and an MBA graduate of Harvard Business School, said: “I am very pleased that Alghanim Industries has been able to host this seminar.  The company is committed to the future and to encouraging young Kuwaitis in developing their careers and I hope that today’s ‘Harvard Seminar’, which has been led by one of the world’s leading authorities on business thinking,  has been helpful to everyone involved.”

Gordon Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and Executive Advisor to Alghanim Industries, the seminar focused on providing participants with world-class tools and techniques to help them shape their professional futures.  Professor Hall touched on topics such as key factors to consider when looking for suitable roles, how to become a great leader, and the importance of working for a company that cares about your professional growth.

Professor Hall is the Head of the Negotiation, Organizations and Markets (NOM) Unit at Harvard Business School.  He is also an Executive Advisor at Alghanim Industries, and has worked with the company for over 10 years.

OVER 200 ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES EMPLOYEES IN RUN Q8

Alghanim Industries sponsored over 200 of its employees to run in RunQ8, the annual 10K race which was held in Kuwait on 29 November to raise money for the treatment of children at the Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC). The sponsorship forms part of the company’s commitment to supporting initiatives and programs which enhance the wellbeing of Kuwait’s community.
 
The company, which paid the race entry fees for any employee taking part in RunQ8, sponsored employees from its corporate headquarters as well as from many of its core businesses such as Alghanim Automotive, Alghanim Engineering, Alghanim Motors, ATLAS, Enaya Insurance, GTRC, KIMMCO, Kirby, Safat Home and X-cite by Alghanim Electronics. ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES HONORS KUWAITI STUDENTS AS GOLD SPONSOR OF NUKS CONFERENCE IN USA

The sponsorship of the conference is part of Alghanim Industries’ ongoing commitment to supporting education initiatives and to reinforcing its outreach to undergraduates, as one of Kuwait’s most progressive and competitive employers.

The conference also included a career fair, which was inaugurated by Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah, the Kuwait Ambassador to the United States, and featured many companies providing advice and information about career opportunities open to students after they graduate.  Alghanim Industries had a fully-staffed, interactive booth at which student information was collected, using the LinkedIn ‘Check-In’ system. The fair provided the company with the opportunity to tell students about its diverse business sectors, as well as its range of internships and talent development programs, which are specifically designed for undergraduates and fresh graduates.

All visitors to the Alghanim Industries booth received a gift bag and were able to take part in a free raffle for great prizes such as an iPhone 6, iPad Air 2, a Mac notebook and Costa Coffee gift baskets. 

As a Gold Sponsor, Alghanim Industries held a luncheon hosted by Al-Watan TV Presenter, Jassim Alabouh. During the luncheon, Jassim conducted a dynamic trivia team quiz about Kuwait and Alghanim Industries for over 400 students. ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES HOLDS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WORKSHOPS FOR EMPLOYEES

In recognition of October as International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as part of the company’s commitment to provide employees with quality healthcare support, Alghanim Industries’ Medical Services team conducted free breast cancer awareness workshops for employees at the company’s headquarters on October 14 and 15, 2014.

 During the two 90-minute workshops, which were attended by over 70 employees, presentations were given by Dr. Sameh Aziz, Director of Alghanim Industries’ Medical Services and Dr. Cristina Cura, a local obstetrics/gynecology specialist. The doctors shared practical advice about breast cancer, its risk factors, early-detection measures such as self-examinations, and information about tests, treatments and outcomes. 

As part of the practical element of the workshops, participants each visited three interactive stations staffed by Dr. Aziz, Dr. Cura and Head Nurse Paula Valdez, from Alghanim Industries’ Medical Services team.  At the stations, the employees were able to apply the knowledge they had learned during the presentations.  The workshops concluded with a personal story of breast cancer treatment and recovery by Jane Chacko, a manager in Alghanim Industries’ employee communications department.

At the end of the sessions, participants completed a short quiz, were awarded a certificate of participation and received a complimentary breast cancer awareness coffee mug. The workshops were well-received and the organizers hope that the participants will now take the valuable information they have learned and share it with family, friends and colleagues.

ALGHANIM AUTOMOTIVE UNVEILS THE ALL-NEW 2015 CADILLAC ESCALADE

The 21st century marks a technological breakthrough in the automotive industry thanks to General Motors, an automotive company whose name has become synonymous for power, durability and luxury. ALGHANIM INDUSTRIES AND THE WENDY'S COMPANY ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO EXPAND IN THE MIDDLE EAST

February 15, 2015 – (Shuwaikh, Kuwait) – Alghanim Industries and The Wendy’s Company (‘Wendy’s’®) (NASDAQ: WEN), announced today the signing of a Master Franchise Agreement aimed at expanding the Wendy’s brand in the Middle East. This deal reinforces Alghanim Industries’ strategy to partner with international food and beverage franchises and build on the company’s previous successful acquisition of Costa Coffee (Kuwait) in 2013.Alghanim Industries acquired the rights to develop Wendy’s restaurants across the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region from Alamar Foods, a Saudi-based company owned jointly by Al Jammaz Group and the Carlyle Group. The value of the deal remains undisclosed. Alghanim Industries has acquired all operational outlets in the UAE with plans to open additional stores across MENA over the next 10 years. Part of the expansion in the region includes opening stores in Alghanim Industries home market, Kuwait, which has among the highest consumption of fast food per capita in the MENA region.

HONDA SETS NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORD™
Honda has set a new Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption, measured against all cars in the 24 contiguous European Union countries. Honda recorded an average of 2.82 litres/100km over a distance of 13, 498 km, recorded in a 25-day drive through the 24 countries.
Behind the wheel of a Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC for the entire journey were two members of Honda’s European Research & Development (R&D) team, Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren, who took on the challenge to further demonstrate the impressive real-world fuel economy of the Tourer.
The remarkable distance travelled is similar to the team driving to Australia from their home in the UK, stopping just nine times to refuel. The car achieved an incredible average of 1500km  on each tank of fuel, at a total fuel cost for the whole journey of just 645 Euros*.
The team set out on their epic road trip from Aalst, Belgium, on Monday June 1st, navigating the continent in a clockwise direction. They returned to their start point on Thursday June 25th, recording the incredible fuel economy figures, which exceed the Tourer’s quoted efficiency of 3.8 litres per 100km  by more than 25%.
Fergal McGrath comments: “It was tough, but we really enjoyed it, and setting this new Guinness World Record has made all of the hard work worthwhile. This was a huge team effort so I’d like to thank everyone involved for all of their commitment and support. After spending so much time behind the wheel, Julian and I are just happy to be back behind our desks for a while!”
The official GUINNESS WORLD RECORD title is ‘Lowest Fuel Consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries’, measured in litres per 100km and miles per gallon calculated over the entire journey.Under the rules the same two drivers must be in the car for the whole journey, giving Fergal and Julian, Honda R&D colleagues of some 18 years and based in the UK, the challenge of driving an average of approximately 600km, taking around 7.5 hours, each day.
Based on strict and rigorous guidelines, the Guinness World Record attempt required the car to enter each of the 24 countries specified, collecting a range of evidence including a fuel/mileage logbook, GPS readings, video and photographs and independent witness signatures to prove that it has done so. To ensure accurate monitoring of the route, journey time and distance driven, the record car was fitted with a tracking device, provided by fleet telematics and stolen vehicle recovery expert, TRACKER (part of the Tantalum Corporation).
Under the rules of the record title attempt the car must be a standard model in every respect, with no modifications to create an advantage, to replicate ‘real world’ conditions. This was judged by independent witnesses at the beginning and end of the attempt. Fuelling was carried out at regular filling stations, with the tank filled to the maximum at each stop to ensure no weight advantage. Additionally, tyres were inflated to the recommended pressures and the wheel alignment set to factory specification to represent the experience of the regular customer.
The team, both amateur drivers, were also keen to show that through adopting some simple but very effective driving techniques, anybody could achieve such remarkable fuel economy. They simply used some very logical methods including careful and sensible route planning, driving smoothly and consistently without harsh acceleration or braking, anticipating the road conditions ahead, carrying no unnecessary weight, and ensuring that the car was correctly maintained at all times. Driving speed was always within the law and keeping up with traffic conditions.
